Conducting Yourself at the Interview
You have all the qualifications and you have great references, so why dont you get
the perfect job you so desire? It may be the way you conducted the interview that
has prevented you from getting the job. Certainly many people become nervous at
an interview but failing at the interview goes beyond just being nervous. In fact,
there are things that some interviewees do that go beyond the scope of acceptable.
Do not smoke during or before the interview
Although in todays world, smoking during the interview is likely to be impossible
unless you are outside, you also want to avoid smoking right before the interview
and bringing the strong odor of smoke into the room. If you do smoke, have the
courtesy to use breath spray or mints afterward. Nothing detracts from a
conversation quicker than the smell of cigarette smoke.
Turn off your cell phone
Under no conditions should you have your cell phone on during a job interview.
Unless the interview process is extremely long, there is nothing that cannot wait
until you are finished and then only an emergency might be acceptable such as an
extremely sick child or a potential life and death situation with a family member.
Cell phones should only be in the silent mode and used as stated above for extreme
emergencies. If possible, arrange with a family member or friend to take
emergency calls and handle them while you are at a job interview.
Stay focused
Another mistake people make at interviews is failing to remain focused on the
interview. Instead of maintaining eye contact with the interviewer they look around
the room, look out the window, daydream or any other number of things including
looking in a purse, making notes unrelated to the interview, playing with a cell
phone and twiddling of thumbs. All of these show signs of boredom and will put you
in a negative light when it comes to getting the perfect jobor any job as far as
that goes.
Choose appropriate discussions
The interviewer may ask a few things about your personal life such as whether
family issues will affect your job and the like but dont discuss your husband or
boyfriend beyond those issues that directly relate to the job. The interviewer does
not want to know that youre getting ready to buy a new house or that your church
is having a bazaar.
7 Easy Steps to Improve Your Interviewing Skills
In the midst of technological advancement nowadays, the “back-tobasics” rule still applies when it comes to getting hired for a job. It
does not matter if you are planning to apply for a million-pound company or a small, independent firm. When you face an interviewer,
it all boils down to how you present yourself. This is the deciding factor whether you will get hired or not.
So you have distributed your resume to prospective employers and you have determined the correct job to apply for. The next step is to
schedule the job interview.
You can make the acquaintance of the assistant or the receptionist when you schedule for the interview, either by phone or personally. Be
friendly and polite, as these people might provide information that can be essential to getting that job or, even just give you a background of
the company or your prospective boss.
Finally, you show up for the interview. The basic traits of being prompt, how you speak and carry yourself
and even how you dress are all factors that contribute in making a lasting impression that will eventually get you hired.
5 Ways to Finding Job Vacancies in London
During the economic meltdown in the past two years many workers lost their jobs. The sharp reduction in the financial worth of key financial assets such as, properties, shares etc., led to a depletion of monetary resources to keep many firms in business. This financial crisis has had serious and even damaging effects on the strong and mighty in the financial world. Considering how severely big businesses were adversely affected, many smaller businesses were washed away from the markets by the flood of financial woe and meltdown. London being one of the major financial capitals in the world was not left unscathed by this misfortune, but still strives to recover from its effects and aftermath problems. These have made the job market an uneasy and sometimes fierce battleground.
The five most popular and effective ways to find jobs vacancies in London are through the following.
1. Friends and Word of Mouth: Your first step in finding a job in London is to be open about your desire to find a job and speak to people. The world is still largely a place where who you know is as important as what you know. Speak to your friends, family and sometimes people you meet along the way. You may join forums that deal with your business niche. Do you have friends in positions that will be helpful to you? Even if you do not know anyone in such a position, your friends and other people may have those connections. If you are able to gather the right and timely information through word of mouth it stands a good chance of giving you a positive edge in the job market.
2. Job Centre: The next step would be to visit your local ‘Job Centre’. There are very many ‘Job Centre’ offices in London and at least one in every local area. You will find people who are paid and willing to help you in your job search. They have resources that will help you find jobs in London that suit your skills and training. They also have a database of employers who advertise job vacancies in London through their various ‘Job Centre’ offices and website. You may also be eligible to receive certain financial help during your job search. The job centre plus on Chadwick Street, London, SW1P 2EP? has seen an increase in the amount of people finding jobs in that area of London. Some other job centres that will be helpful are the offices at 26-46 Lisson Grove, Regent’s Park, London, NW1 6TZ?, 1 Barnsbury Road, London, N1 0EX, Coburg House, 63-67 Newington Causeway, London, SE1 6BD; which have all seen job seekers from all over London visit their offices for help.
3. Recruitment Agencies: It is highly advised that you register with as many recruitment agencies as possible, especially the ones who deal with job vacancies in London for your specific need. When you register in some of these recruitment agencies, you may be asked to undergo an aptitude test or some sort of other short test depending on the job niche. In registering you may also need to confidentially give them some personal information about yourself. I do not know of any recruitment agency that does not adhere to data protection laws. If you are concerned about these do not hesitate to ask about their data protection policy. Creating a good rapport with recruitment consultants will make them remember you and hopefully inform you immediately a vacancy arises. Some might place you on a waiting list. Make sure you check in from time to time to make sure your file does not become forgotten paperwork.
A few recruitment agencies in London which will be helpful include Manpower 52 High Holborn, London, WC1V 6RB, Reed 9 Kingsway, London, WC2B 6XF, Adecco 351 Oxford Street, London, W1C 2JF, Office Angels 25-27 Oxford Street, London, W1D 2DW? etc.
4. Newspapers: In London there are a few free newspapers which have job vacancy advertisements. Examples of such free newspapers are the ‘London Lite’ and ‘London Paper’. You can also buy some magazines, news papers and brochures which advertise job vacancies. The ‘London Loot’ is one of such papers. During the past Christmas holidays, the London Loot paper featured a wide list of job vacancies in the Brixton Area of London. A few newspapers advertise specific job vacancies in London on certain days of the week. You may want to note that and pick up a newspaper on the day when vacancies within your job search area are being advertised. Other newspapers which advertise job vacancies in London are the ‘London Times’, ‘Guardian’, ‘Daily Telegraph’ etc.
5. Online Job Websites: The internet is ever increasing as a major source for information. There are websites dedicated to job advertising and job searches. You can register on these websites, build a profile or portfolio and post your ‘Curriculum Vitae’ (CV) on the internet. Employers will be able to see your CV and contact you if they are attracted by your profile. Also you can search for job vacancies and apply directly for specific advertised positions. You can even send applications to several employers in a few clicks. For example you can register on the ‘London Career Builder’ website and search for job vacancies in London. You will need to invest some of your time and focus to effectively search for jobs vacancies in London using online job websites.

Here are some tips on how you can hold your
Here are some tips on how you can hold your own against a big
business:
1. Small businesses have big competition.
This means that you need to know how to survive out there.
No matter what nature of business you have, it is better to learn about
the competition so that you will be able to survive.
Here are some tips on how you can survive the big competition:
>Keep your business alive.
When it seems as if your cash flow is in a downward slope, keep a
tight rein on your budget.
Do not spend on unnecessary business purchases and always balance
your books.
If you are one to buy on impulse or if you are the type to listen to
those who sweet-talk you into purchasing “necessary” items, control
yourself.
Get a second and third opinion if possible, as these impulsive buys
may lead to the end of your small organization.
>Do not be afraid to seek professional help.
The fall of most small businesses start with decisions on problems
which are not carefully analyzed.
Although you think that you already have a contingency plan, make
sure that you have foreseen the results of a certain business decision.
In the long run, it is better to seek professional help rather than
embark on a plan that could start the downfall of your business.
>Keep your books straight.
The better option is for you to hire a professional outside accountant to
figure the returns of your investment and handle the other financial
aspects of your business.
>Take advantage of every free business counseling whenever
available.
This does not just help widen your knowledge, but it will also give you
an idea of how other businesses are ran by small-scale owners.
>Know exactly where your business is headed.
In your day-to-day operation, make sure that you know where you
want your company to be 5 or 10 years from now.
Be always aware of the trends in the industry that you are in, practice
good money management and learn how to recognize potential
problems before they arise.
Things to Consider when Identifying the Perfect Job
During your process of identifying the perfect job, there are some things you may
want to keep in mind. Although you are going to identify what is important to you
its also important to be realistic in your expectations. Some of the areas in which
people tend to place the most focus and expect too much are listed below. Look at
the items on your list and see how it compares to the items on this list.
Salary
Salary is one of the biggest areas where people have a tendency to expect too
much. They tend to think they are worth more than they really are to a new
company, and that often causes them to lose the position. Be realistic when you
identify your salary requirements, keeping in mind that now many employers are
not hiring at all, so getting an interview gives you an edge over others.
Medical Insurance
Although this is an area of major concern, it is also one that many people tend to
overstate when identifying their perfect job. Very few employers today are paying
the full cost of medical insurance, so to include that as an item on your list of
criteria for the perfect job is ludicrous. What you need to do is rephrase it to state
medical insurance at a reasonable cost.
Vacation and Sick Time
Do not lump the two of these together because not all companies offer sick time. In
fact some companies actually lump the two together and call it by various terms or
they may include sick time as part of personal time or include both vacation and
sick time as one item. You also dont want to expect to take vacation right away or
have two weeks right away. Although some companies do allow two weeks
vacation after six months, many companies still only offer one week during the first
year.
Retirement Plan or 401K
Many companies today are getting away from the retirement plan and staying with
the 401K plan. This is reasonable to expect from your perfect job but do not
attempt to identify what you expect from the plan since it is regulated by the
government leaving the company itself very little leeway in what it can offer. The
only difference you may find among companies is the funds they offer and
percentage they contribute for each employee.
