Job Search – How to Handle Rejection and Follow Up

Last Saturday evening my wife and I visited friends at their home. They are a couple I have known since elementary school days, seventh grade as I recall. Yes, childhood! They grew up living next door to each other, dated during high school, and are still together. Last year they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

They had invited several people for dinner – all of whom I have known since childhood. After dinner we were seated in their family room talking about some of the silly stuff that has happened over the years. Suddenly their cocker spaniel, who happens to have run of the furniture, wanted attention, and jumped into my lap. I was a little surprised, because at home we will not allow our dog on the couch, and I was not expecting little Rex to land on me. But I decided that is okay. I am a dog-person.

I petted Rex for a while, and when I stopped he stuck his muzzle under my arm and pushed upward – hard. He wanted to be petted more. A few minutes later when I again stopped, he gave me the muzzle-up treatment again. I said, “No, Rex,” but he continued to want me to rub under his ears. He would not take “No” for an answer. So he persisted. Rejection did not bother him. He simply continued to let me know what he wanted.

People do not enjoy rejection, and most will go out of their way to avoid it. Therefore they will no ask to be hired. They might be turned down. Then they do not try to contact the interviewer again a few days later to see how things stand. Have you been there? You have gone through an interview, did not get the job at that moment, and a couple days later when you want to call back, suddenly the telephone seems to weigh 2,000 pounds. You can not bring yourself to call.

Relax. The business is looking for a particular person to fill the job position, they had more interviews to do, and the owner wanted the office manager to interview everyone who applied – whether or not they qualify. You are on the list, and you helped put yourself at the top of their list. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. You just have to call to keep reminding them you exist. You have to be like little Rex, and not take no for an answer several times.

Almost nobody calls back to follow-up with the interviewer. How crazy is that? Other people applying for the job all have telephones that seem to weigh a ton. When you follow-up you are making yourself stand out again. Do it. You will be surprised.

PostHeaderIcon Job Fairs – Recruiting Or Marketing? (UAE Market)

UAE had been struck with the recession fever like every other part of the world, though the open display of recession in UAE came to realization at a very later point of time.

The sudden pink slip phenomenon in UAE left people clueless as to what’s to be done next; of course a few left for their home country while a few still hoped to get a job in some other company. It has been nearly a year since recession struck the country and things seem to get better, but the question is,”Is the situation really improving or is it only SEEMING to improve?”.

Honestly speaking looking into the scenario existing now we can’t really come to any sort of firm consensus. There have been several job fairs that are taking place, Tawdheef being the biggest recruitment show in UAE, National Career Exhibition (NCE )-a career fair held in Sharjah and lately the Careers UAE fair held in Dubai, all of them having nearly 70 participating companies.

At first sight which might seem a whopping number of companies paving opportunities to 1000′s of possible jobs, the fact is that its not all really true.

Tawdheef had companies participating from various sectors like Engineering, Information Technology, Finance, Accounting, Construction, Hospitality, Healthcare, Administration, Management, Sales & Marketing, etc
however at the NCE, the companies participating were mostly from the banking sector; undoubtedly this brings hope and smiles to several faces now who are seeking a job in the banking sector. But, does participating in a career fair mean the companies also offer jobs?- perhaps, NOT. When approached to various participating exhibitors at NCE, there was plain denial to accept CV’s from expatriates and were however asked to register on the web.

One question which strikes everyone would be why accept resume’s from locals and ask expatriates to apply online? Well the answer is quiet obvious, recession has probably been replaced by Emiratization, the good news however is that as of now it is only the banking sector which is undergoing Emiratization at a rapid rate. The idea of Emiratization could be further solidified if we consider the fact that Careers UAE was an event strictly for Emiratis and that expatriates were not allowed to enter as job seekers in the fair at all – of course the idea of careers UAE was to empower Emiratis and provide them with opportunities; now the interesting part is that though various companies at NCE and Tawdheef were demanding Emiratis, there has not been a much of intake of Emiratis either, which eventually further solidifies the idea of marketing and sustaining market presence over actual recruitment. But all of this still does not answer the question if participation really means recruiting. Surely Emiratization is on, however there is no denial to the fact that recession has struck the banking sector adversely and in order to sustain their image it could be said that the participating companies from the banking sector might not be recruiting, rather they are probably participating to be counted in the list of known banks, which is more of a marketing strategy to hold existing customer trust and attract new customers.

This could also apply to other sectors like Engineering, Information Technology, Finance, Accounting, Construction etc that had participated in the job fairs too. But of course this does not apply to all the participating companies either; a few companies are genuinely recruiting as well.

In the existing perplexed scenario we would want to know how we could possibly know who is recruiting and who is not? Well, in such a case it would be advisable to hook up with recruitment agencies and job portals. http://Careertunity.com is a job site which has been growing very fast since its commencement in 2008 and had participated in both the fairs mentioned above, this sort of a jobsite would probably give you the true facts about the availability of a job since it is a comparatively new company they would not want to jeopardize their reputation by merely participating in fairs with empty vessels; also a job portal would have your Resume on its database wherein if you don’t get through one job your CV’s will not be discarded and will be retained for it to be available for other jobs by various other employers, thereby never letting you out of opportunities.

Tip: It is necessary for the applicant to keep updating the CV and keep a check on the various jobs available – this will keep your CV in the front pages.

In conclusion, the one thing that could be said is that Job Fairs definitely do have genuine recruiters but that does not mean all of the participants are there for recruiting – there sure is no harm in applying everywhere possible but it is definitely worthwhile applying at job portals and recruitment agencies.

Today, I want to be your cheerleader and hopefully provide you with a little hope and renewed energy for your search.

If you’ve been a reader of our blog for any length of time you’ll quickly realize that we’re very forthcoming with free tips, advice, and resources about how to improve your resume, cover letter, networking, LinkedIn profile, personal branding, interview, and job search. I try to formulate the tips and advice I provide based on real problems, downfalls, and issues I see job seekers struggling with every day-combined with some good ol’ real world experience as a hiring manager, of course. Aside from all the career advice we give (listen closely… here’s my disclaimer for this article) this article will not contain any to-the-point, hard advice on careers, job search, etc. What it will do is tell you that perseverance pays off. You CAN do it! If it’s not working, change it-and hold on tight, because before you know it, you’ll have that new position.

Are you doing everything possible to ensure that you’re putting yourself out there and that your information will catch the eye of a recruiter or hiring manager? Searchable LinkedIn profiles optimized for the positions you want to obtain, twitter accounts, networking online and off, professionally written resume, creative job search techniques? If you’ve never read any of Kevin Donlin’s blog articles about guerilla job search I encourage you to hop online and read his blog or get his free CD (I’m getting no kickbacks here-honest! He doesn’t even know me). What I am trying to do is get you to be creative in your job search. If what you’re currently doing isn’t working, then what risk or harm is there in changing it up? Isn’t the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result? I like Donlin’s articles/blogs because they are creative, out there, and they work. For example, he recommends sending your information in a handwritten envelope that resembles a thank you letter. Everyone loves a thank you letter, and it guarantees your resume, cover letter, pitch letter, etc. will be read! Unprofessional or genius? Our job seekers are getting jobs this way when we mail out their resumes and pitch letters like this.

So the moral of the story is… Hold on-your breakthrough is coming! Be patient and persevere, stay the course; but if the same old junk isn’t working, then don’t be afraid to take a risk and change it up. You’re doing all the right things, and one day you’ll be rewarded with a new promotion, better position, or great new opportunity. You can do it-we believe in you! So put yourself out there, take a few risks, try something new, and above all else, keep your hopes up. We told you this blog article would be just one big cheerleading session! Go get ‘em, tiger!

There are two parts to the perfect job: obtaining it and keeping it. Its easy enough
to get hired for the job of your dreams but being able to keep that job for the long
haul is another story. With such an up and down turn in the economy over the
years many companies are downsizing and even the best people are losing their
jobs. How is it that some people are terminated while others manage to keep their
jobs? Is there something special that separates those people from the others?
One reason some people keep their jobs while others around them are being
downsized is their dedication. For some people a job is just a job and those are
usually the first ones to be eliminated when there is the need to cut staff.
Companies have a tendency to keep those employees who are dedicated, loyal and
put forth a little extra effort to get the job done. These are the people are receive
recognition for their efforts and are the first ones to be considered for a promotion.
You must become one of those dedicated people if you want to not only obtain the
perfect job but also keep it throughout a struggling economy.

Although there is never a guarantee you will keep your job, the harder you work
and the more dedicated you are the better the chances are that you will still being
sitting at your desk when others have been terminated. In places where no union
enforces the rules, the newest person is not necessarily the first person to go but
rather the person who has the least amount of dedication and loyalty to the
company. This person comes in on time and leaves on time seldom working
overtime while the dedicated employee may even come in early or stay late without
recording the time, especially when work needs completed and there is no budget
for overtime.

You invested a lot of time and effort into obtaining your perfect jobnow you want
to use that same effort and dedication to keep your job and rise to higher levels.
Develop your own standards rather than following what others around you are
doing. Put worth the effort that you feel is right for you and dont pay attention to
what anyone else thinks you should do. The choices you make will determine
whether you are the person who stays or goes when your company needs to make
staffing cuts.
