Job Hunting Tips
Are you a fresh graduate and planning to look for a job? Did you just recently quit your job and are looking for greener pastures? Are you unemployed and have little experience regarding ways to secure a job? Whatever your situation may be, it would be to your advantage to
study the following tips:
Check your resume for mistakes Before submitting your resume to a recruitment consultants, check your it for corrections at least three times before handing it over. After researching about the job position, it is critical that you format your resume to match the needs of the company. For example, if you are applying for an accounting job, you should put in detail your accounting experience on your resume. Typographical and grammatical errors are serious no-no’s. It is also ideal to keep the length of the resume’ to at least a page and a half long. Taking the interview challenge
A survey conducted by a staffing and consulting firm based in California which corresponded with 1,400 chief financial officers concluded that candidates for employment made most of their mistakes on their interviews. Some of the mistakes they made include:
Arriving late
Having little knowledge about the company
Having little knowledge about the position applied for
Having a superiority complex
Behaving arrogantly
The body language of the applicant must also denote that he isconfident yet not overpowering. He must maintain eye contact, have a strong handshake, and avoid looking defensive by the act of crossing the arms. Wearing the right clothes is crucial for projecting a confident stance. As they say, it is better to go to an interview over-dressed than being under-dressed.
Answer questions smartly
A common mistake of interviewees is that they tend to get tense and forget the questions that are given to them, which has the effect that they are not prepared for the interview. It is important to research the company and the position applied for to prevent being side-tracked during the interview. If you do not know the answer to the questions being asked, it is better to admit you don’t know the answer to the
question and add that you can research about it. Look for the skills or expertise that the company is looking for so that when interview day comes and the interviewer asks about your strengths and core competencies, you will be able to match it to what they need.
Getting the necessary referrals
Having a referral from one of the company employees can go a long way toward landing an interview. A typical company may receive job applications in the hundreds and usually 35% to 60% of all job vacancies are filled by referrals. The odds of getting hired when you have a referral are very high if you have another 200 to 500 applicants vying for the same position. If you do not know anyone from the company that may give you a referral, it is a good idea to network the alumni of your college or university, trade groups, social networks, and professional associations. Remember, having a referral greatly increases your chances of getting the position.
Dressing for the Interview
One of the key factors that will help you achieve success in getting that perfect job
is the way you dress when you interview. Even if you are applying for a position in
a warehouse, do not assume it is acceptable to dress in jeans and a sweatshirt. In
fact, it is never acceptable to wear jeans to an interview unless the company tells
you specifically that they are having a casual day on the day of your interview or
that you will be in an area where jeans or other casual clothing would be more
appropriate.
Although it is becoming more common for both men and women to dress in
business casual clothing for interviews, you have to keep the type of position in
mind when you dress. Always remember the saying taken from a book by the same
name Dress for Success. What this means is dress according to the position for
which you are applying. Although it may be appropriate to wear khakis and a casual
top for a position as a customer service representative, when you are applying for a
managers position you might want to wear at least a skirt and blouse for women
and a suit for the men. Ladies may choose to substitute a pants suit for a skirt and
blouse, especially in colder weather.
Another thing to keep in mind when you are dressing for an interview is to not wear
anything that is going to draw attention to your clothes and away from you. You
want the interviewer to keep his or her focus on you, so do not wear brightly
colored clothing. Even if the position allows for jeans and a top wear something in a
neutral tone. For men and women stay with colors such as black, navy, gray or
brown for slacks and skirts and white or pastel tops. Ladies should also choose
appropriate length skirts and not wear slacks that are tight or revealing.
In order to obtain your perfect job you have to look the part. It should go without
saying but make sure your clothes are clean and wrinkle-free. You want to give the
interviewer the impression that you are serious about the job and not just looking
for something to pass the time for a few months. First impressions are those that
last and if you cannot impress the interviewer during your interview, you will not
have a second chance.
How To Use Craigslist.com To Find A Telecommuting Job
Telecommuting is a wonderful option for anyone who would prefer working at home to working in an employers office. The benefits of having a telecommuting job are immense especially for parents who want to be at home with young children. Imagine having an extra hour in the morning and evening to spend with your family because you dont have any drive time. Also imagine not having to spend as much time or money on the clothes required to work in a professional office. Granted, you may have to go to an occasional outside meeting every once in a while, but for the most part, itll just be you and your computer and the computer doesnt care what you wear.
Finding a telecommuting job isnt always easy but for the well-skilled job seeker, there are many jobs to be found. Tenacity and patience are the attributes you will need to make your way through the maze of finding the job youre seeking. Below is outlined one resource Craigslist.com that you can use when you start your search for a telecommuting job. This is not the only resource available to you, its just one of many, but its a good place to start. The jobs are there, you just need to find them.
Craigslist.com is a national classified ad website where a lot of great jobs get posted, including those looking for work at home telecommuters. The website is free to read and it’s free to post as well. It’s become a very popular place to find jobs that are available. This article will explain how to find the telecommuting jobs that are advertised.
To find telecommuting jobs, first go to http:www.craigslist.com. Click on any city in the right-hand column, and then choose a job type in the column to the left of the city column. It doesn’t matter what type of job category you choose, we’re going to change that choice anyway.
Once you get to the next page, you’ll see a search box at the top of the page. Leave the KEYWORDS field blank and change the drop-down box to ALL JOBS. Then place a check mark in the Telecommute box. Click Search. All the telecommuting jobs for the city you chose will post to the page.
You will need to click into each job separately to determine if it is a legitimate job posting or not. Often you will also find regular jobs posted as telecommuting jobs, so read the postings carefully. Watch out for the postings that offer more money than what you know to be a normal pay range for the job you’re seeking, they are probably scams. Also, be careful about going to interviews, if its not in an office building where other people are around, like at someones house, either pass on the offer or explain to the interviewer that with internet fraud as bad as it is, you would feel more comfortable meeting in a public place like a restaurant or a coffee house.
CraigsList doesnt offer a feature to search the entire country and it’s a shame because it makes this type of research very time consuming having to check each city individually. It may be easier for you to set a “Favorites” folder with all the searches so you can get to each city quickly. You should consider checking every major city since telecommuting can be done from anywhere in the country. It doesnt matter if youre in a tiny town in Texas and the company is located in New York City or Los Angeles. Just be sure to watch the ad to be sure it doesnt request you to be local to the employer, some require periodic meetings in their office. And lastly, be sure to only apply to the most recent entries as these jobs go quickly, no need to waste your time applying for a job that’s already filled.
Good luck with your job search. A little hard work along with some patience while seeking out the jobs should help you to be employed in no time.
