PostHeaderIcon Effective Resume Writing

A lot of places around the world call it A Curriculum Vitae, in North America, it’s a Résumé. This is definitely one of the most important tools that any jobseeker has at their disposal. You may be THE best candidate for a particular job by a long way, however, if you don’t make it to the interview stages the company will never know.

Many companies (especially the larger corporations) will use computer software to “read” all the résumé’s and reject any that don’t fit a particular template. This may seem unfair, but it’s cost effective.

So, for some jobs you have to beat the computer and still read well enough for someone who may not have any knowledge of the position you are applying for. It is definitely worthwhile to adapt your resume for the position that is advertised. There may well be some of the “buzz” words the “filter” is looking for mentioned in the job description.

It is very important that you can substantiate all the claims you make, preferably with physical examples or letters. This will be essential in any in interview situation.

There is now a wealth of information available online, from books, local employment offices and with professional writing agencies. You can also access other people’s résumé’s that are posted online which will give some great ideas for style and content.

Professional writers may seem the answer, but, all the research I have done seems to lean away from them. I have never used one and feel that it will give a good impression if you have written it yourself (this will display literacy). Apparently, if they are professionally written, they are easy to spot; however, they may be worth the expense if you are stuck. You can always “customise” what has been written to make it your own work.

In my case, I had been in the military since I left school and had never written a resume or had an interview. I spent a lot of time writing, copying other people’s styles and changing things. I didn’t realise how difficult it is to catch up on 16 years - I’ll never allow mine to go out of date again! I found the hardest part was to actually start writing. The best advice I was given was to just write anything that you can think of and it will soon start to flow. With modern word processors it’s relatively quick and easy to cut and paste so you can keep on changing it until you are happy. PostHeaderIcon Interviewing Skills: A Key To Anyones Future

So when was the last time you interviewed? How did it go for you? My guess is that it went poorly for you and that is no slam on you personally its just that most people fear interviews and lose a lot of jobs as a result. I read something like 85% of people in the work force right now had to go through 5-6 interviews before they landed the job that they are in right now. Now there may be multiple reasons for this figure but let me tell you the overwhelming majority of people, if they knew the secrets of successful interviewing skills would land the job they want every time. Instead of getting turned down, they would be turning down job offers.

So isn’t it just a personality thing? Well yes and no. Personality certainly goes a long way in carrying a conversation and presenting yourself in a good light, but very few people have this endearing personality. There are a lot more people who land jobs than people with gregarious personalities–and that is because they now how to interview. Yes, interviewing skills can definitely be and should be learned. So how do people learn?

Well a lot of people have learned interviewing skills through trial and error. The more you do something the better you get at it (usually!). But who wants to learn like this…I mean there are few things that are more painful than getting a rejection letter. Also how fun are interviews in general? Basically most people want to avoid them entirely! Then, wouldn’t it be great if you could learn what makes a successful interview from the eyes of the potential employer? Wouldn’t it be nice to go into an interview with the mindset that you are evaluating them and not the other way around?

Another important thing to remember is that this goes much deeper than learning interviewing skills or tricks. In fact the training that makes you good at interviewing, makes you successful in life. Communication for instance is a fundamental part of success whether it be social confidence, or ability to manage, or network…and on and on.

Learning (and I 100% guarantee that you can learn this stuff) interviewing skills is profitable for anyone from the fresh graduate to the seasoned business man. It is also great for you life outside of work including parenting, dating, marriage–you name it! So don’t wait any longer to get this valuable part of your success under your control!

So you want to know how to write a good resume, huh?  Well, how do we define a “good resume”?  In my experience, a good resume is pleasing to look at, easy to read, and contains all the information necessary to know whether or not the person represented by said resume can do the job in an effective and efficient manner.  A good resume should look professional and reflect the abilities of the person it is meant to represent without a lot of fluff in between the lines.

Knowing how to write a good resume could quite possibly be one of the most valuable business skills you can ever learn.  Hardly anyone stays in the same job for years and years and years like days of the past.  We are constantly looking for new challenges, more money, and more satisfaction, so having the skill of knowing how to write a good resume is something that you will always have.  It can mean the difference between getting an interview and not getting an interview.

A good resume will include only pertinent information about you – the job applicant.  It is written in a professional and positive manner focusing on abilities, skills, and talents that can benefit your future employer.  Of course, that can be a little difficult to do on paper, but not when you know what words to use.  A thesaurus can be a life saver here when you are looking for the right words.

Never, ever, make any job sound like it is a mundane, boring position.  It doesn’t matter if you are standing behind the counter at your local Starbucks, you can still focus on the positive aspects of that job.  For example, when you make the coffee, you are responsible for quality control.  When you give it to the customer, you are insuring good customer service.  When you ring it up on the cash register, you are responsible for cash flow.  Any job can sound much better when you “flower it up” and be creative in doing so!

Look on the Internet for tools and tips on how to write a good resume.  We especially like the web site at www.hotjobs.yahoo.com.  Not only do they have examples of resumes to refer to, they have many articles on how to write a good resume and even provide a resume writing service where you pay a professional resume writer to craft your resume from information you provide to them.

Want to know how to write a good resume?  Just be honest, give as much information as possible in the space provided, and then let the resume talk for you.  Then wait for your call to interview!

* Anything else that you want to tell your potential employer about

Above all, you need to be professional in your presentation of your cover letter.  Make sure that it looks wonderful and gives all of the pertinent information that a potential employer would need to know about you and what makes you the perfect person for the job.  The resume is important, but the cover letter is just as important.  It gives you the opportunity to say what you can’t on the resume.  So craft your cover letter just as carefully as your resume and then wait for the interview call!
